Nick Hughes, Sales Director, Hitachi Rail Europe tells Intelligent Transport how transport ticketing is continuously changing and why new payment technology carries equal benefits not just for passengers but operators too.
How we pay for public transport seems completely unrecognisable from 10 years ago. A recent study found that passenger payments made using cash have more than halved since 2006 and all evidence points to this trend accelerating in the coming years.
Thanks to smart ticketing, the common horrors of trying to find the correct change for the bus, or losing your precious paper rail season ticket, are confined to the past. Our cashless and paperless society has arguably had the biggest impact on transport.
