Portsmouth City Council has announced that City Centre South is set for a transportation transformation as work begins on projects designed to enhance public transport and active travel. A key component of the South East Hampshire Rapid Transit (SEHRT) initiative, these improvements are scheduled for completion by May 2024.

The transformative efforts in City Centre South include widening Isambard Brunel Road for a smoother two-way traffic flow, installing a controlled pedestrian crossing near Guildhall Square and replacing the mini roundabout with a crossroad traffic light junction, all aimed at creating a safer and more efficient environment for public transport users and active travellers.

Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said: “As more people are choosing to walk and cycle in the city, it is important that we continue to invest in the infrastructure that keeps them safe. I look forward to seeing more people choosing to travel by bus, bike and on foot once the works are completed.”

During construction, restrictions on general traffic flow through Station Square junction and Isambard Brunel Road will be in place, limiting access to buses, taxis, private hire vehicles and cyclists. Commuters are urged to explore the park and ride option, offering a quick and efficient means of reaching the city centre in under 10 minutes.

Construction, incorporating both daytime and night time work, will persist until project completion, unless an earlier finish is achieved. Bus routes in City Centre South will continue operating with some temporary relocations of bus stops. Pedestrian diversion routes will be signposted, and access to Portsmouth and Southsea Railway Station will be maintained.

These developments align with ongoing improvements at Lake Road and Unicorn Road junction, initiated in September 2023, and upcoming works on Charlotte Street. The SEHRT project aims to create a seamless and accessible public transport and active travel network, making it easier for residents and visitors to choose healthier and more sustainable transportation options in and around Portsmouth.
