In a bid to enhance the commuting experience for Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) passengers, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has unveiled a comprehensive upgrade to mobile connectivity along key transit routes.
MTA has announced that commuters travelling through Grand Central Madison (GCM) and its tunnels, as well as Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica Station, will now enjoy improved cellular service courtesy of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. The initiative, designed and managed by Boingo Wireless, extends 5G and LTE coverage along approximately 30 miles of the Right of Way, including critical tunnel sections.
The upgraded mobile service is set to revolutionise commuting for LIRR customers, offering seamless connectivity for work and leisure activities. Furthermore, free public Wi-Fi is now available at Atlantic Terminal, Jamaica Station and GCM, providing passengers with uninterrupted access to mobile tickets and real-time train information via the TrainTime app.
Jamie Torres-Springer, President of MTA Construction & Development, said: “Wireless connectivity is key to a 21st-century transit system. We are improving the system every day with capital investments and public-private partnerships in technology to respond to changing rider needs and expectations.”
Acting President of the Long Island Rail Road, Rob Free, said: “These updates will keep Grand Central Madison and Atlantic Branch LIRR customers connected to friends, family or co-workers and to MTA news and alerts via the MYmta or TrainTime apps.”
The partnership with Boingo not only enhances the commuter experience but also holds the promise of generating long-term revenue for MTA. The networks for LIRR are built and managed at no cost to MTA, offering a sustainable solution to meet the growing demand for wireless connectivity in public transportation.
With these enhancements, MTA is poised to deliver a more efficient, convenient and connected commuting experience for millions of passengers traversing the LIRR network, reaffirming its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction in public transit.
